Why is it always a battle of socialist vs capitalist or socialism vs capitalism can't people be both?

Socialism is a middle ground between capitalism and communism. It sounds like you are a socialist, which is the political belief that major industries should be controlled by the State, but within that there is still room for quite a bit of free market forces. Most modern countries are some form of moderate socialism/regulated capitalism, but much less than you advocate. Due to the cold war, many countries resist the term, regardless of it's applicability.
